Chapter 3: the book which brings another encounter
The whole class is filling with laughter. I feel so embarrass that I freeze on the spot. Suddenly I see a hand stretch out towards me. The sounds of laughter vanish. I look up and found out that the owner of the hand is him, Jason. I grab his hand and utter my appreciation to him. He smiles and walks back to his seat. I do the same and the lesson starts.
The lesson talks about how we exist. There is a saying that fairies are born from babies’ first smile and dies when a kid started to believe that we are just a myth. This saying is part true and part absurd. Our first ancestors were born from the babies smiles but they do not die when children started to believe that we are just myth. They die from disease, old age, accidents or fights.
As for mermaids, they have no tails but can swim as swiftly as a fish. Who comes out with the idea that mermaids have tails I do not know. Brief information of other creatures is lecture among the class. It is so interesting that I did not notice that time flies. The bell rings, signaling for recess. I started to feel uncomfortable for I don’t know where the cafeteria is. I don’t want to ask around for they aren’t very friendly towards mixer.
“Let’s go to the cafeteria Jason,” said Jack with a smile, “my treat.”
“Fine by me, let’s go.”
I can follow them to the cafeteria without actually asking someone. I grin at my brightness. I trail after them and reach cafeteria a minute later. The price of food in the cafeteria is so…high class. I can’t even afford them. I give up, left the cafeteria and search for the library. Apparently, library isn’t far away from the cafeteria. The smell of books welcomes me and I smile for it is nostalgic.
I can find books that are my type in this library. It is like they are waiting for me to open them and read them. Books are my friends, they are my savior. They are my doorway to another world and my exit from this cruel reality. I suddenly miss my human friends, the books in my old school or town library and the places that I lived in before I come here.
I shake my head, trying to shake away the thought of the people and places that I miss. I explore the huge library and found out that there are a lot of books I have never read and books that just came out like a week ago. I even squeal with excitement when I found EON wrote by Alison Goodman which I haven’t read it, since it’s new.
I reach out my hand, intent to take the book but a hand suddenly appears and takes it before I can barely touch it. I feel angry and turn around to face the possessor of the hand. It’s a boy, in the age of around 17. He possesses black hair and hazel eyes, which make his face, look good. Even though he’s good looking I am not going to stand back and let him take away the book that I have seen first. When it comes to book, I won’t back away.
“Excuse me but I saw this book first,” I said to him.
“But I am the one who grasp it first,” he reply expressionlessly.
“I am sure there is another same book around. Can you go find this book yourself? I wanted to read this book so badly. I went to almost every bookstore to buy this book but they are out of stock,” I said to him, trying to persuade him to let me read the book first.
“Unfortunately the librarian said that there is only one book left, so bye.” He gives me a sympathy smile that I almost explode from the anger I feel and left me on the spot.
Then I smile evilly. I run and grab the book from his hand and quickly run towards the counter.
“Miss I would like to borrow this book,” I said breathlessly.
“Sure can u please give me your library card?” the young librarian asks me sweetly.
“What card?”
“Card for borrowing the book idiot!” said the boy who I grabbed the book from. “If you don’t have the card, you can’t borrow books out from the library.”
“I completely forgot that libraries needs card for borrowing book,” I said with disappointment and I laugh at my stupid action. I hand out the book to him, “here, I can’t borrow the book.”
“Thank you,” he said with a smile and walk towards the counter with the book.
“Goodbye Eon, until we meet again…” I said sadly in my mind. Then to my astonishment, the boy calls me when I’m outside the library door.
“Hey you, wait!” said the boy, “here. It seems like today is your luck. The person who borrow the book which is the same as this book, give it back just now. I borrow it for you. Remember to give it back to me after you finish reading it.”
I am so grateful to him that tears of gratitude come out from my eyes. “Thank you!”
“It’s no biggie. By the way, here’s the form to request for a card. After you fill the form just pass it to the librarian. Are you new here?”
“Yes. Thank you for giving me the form. May I have your name and your class so that I can give the book back to you.”
“My name is Loren, Loren William. My morning class is in class 6A.”
“What a coincidence, my morning class is next to your class. Mine is 6B.” I said with a happy tone.
“That’s great. Oh look at the time! I got to go. Let’s meet again during lunch time here?” he asks me, his eyes full of enthusiasm that I can’t reject him. I agree with him and watch him disappear from the corner.
“It seems like my intention of having a low profile aren’t going to come true,” I murmur to myself and walks to my class.
